The jaw joint is not an isolated hinge. Through muscles and nerve pathways it is closely connected to the whole body. If the tension in the masticatory system changes, this can spread via so-called muscle chains into the neck, shoulders and back.
Ascending and descending chains
Doctors speak of "ascending" and "descending" chains: a misalignment in the pelvis can act upwards to the jaw — and tension in the jaw downwards into the back. Both directions are possible, and they often reinforce each other.
The body can adapt perfectly — so why complaints everywhere? Because constant tension throws the system out of balance.
Why this is often overlooked
Those who go to an orthopaedist for back pain rarely think of the teeth. That’s exactly why such connections often go unrecognised. We deliberately look beyond the single tooth and check whether the jaw joint could be involved.
We take time for a personal conversation.
